West Bengal Day programmes compulsory in all educational institutions on June 20: Suvendu Govt
A large quantity of government and relief materials was recovered from premises linked to Chandra Ghosal, councillor of Ward No. 23 of the Rajpur-Sonarpur Municipality, triggering protests by local residents in Sonarpur. The recovered items reportedly included street lights, tarpaulins, cement bags, buckets, bleaching powder and other government supplies. Following the recovery, residents gathered in protest, shouted slogans and allegedly threw eggs at the premises.
According to allegations, the materials had been stored instead of being distributed for public use and attempts were being made to move them elsewhere before the recovery. Residents and political workers claimed that essential government supplies remained unavailable to beneficiaries despite local demand. Police seized the recovered materials and launched an investigation into the matter.
Several allegations were also raised against the councillor and her family. Local residents and political opponents alleged that extortion had been taking place in the ward for an extended period and that contractors working on government projects were pressured to pay commissions. It was further alleged that contractors unwilling to pay commissions faced obstacles in carrying out their work. Residents also claimed that some civic projects remained incomplete despite the allocation of government funds.
In a separate development, Rajpur-Sonarpur Municipality councillor Bibhas Mukhopadhyay of Ward No. 4 was arrested on extortion charges from a hotel in the Garia area. Following his arrest, police took him to his residence and conducted searches. Local residents gathered outside during the operation, raised slogans against him and allegedly threw eggs as police carried out the investigation.
